Unless they appear in the future in a game or book and do something specifically when the missions in the original game occur then why can't the game be canon too?The only thing that is different is them having different voices which could easily be explained as to their communicaters set to give them different voices to when their helmets are on to make it easier to tell who is speaking during a firefight or something, which makes a lot of sense. I can't particularly remember anything in Clone Wars (2003) that contradicts anything in canon but per Lucasfilm it's all Legends. The only thing that comes to mind, besides the voices thing, about Republic Commando is units.
By that I mean like the large Geonosians with the flame guns. But as you said, that doesn't necessarily make it implausible. Though everyone has head canon so why not give Lucasfilm the figurative finger, right?. That's why I wish Disney spent more time with the EU and actually tried to look for things that could, even should, have carried over. You can't just throw in an EU character and not explain whether or not that character's EU backstory is canon. It's confusing for fans and can lead to arguments.They should have at least gone back and looked at which characters and aspects of the EU was added to the movies and The Clone Wars and decided what parts to include. Sure, it would have been quite a bit for some characters, and it would be weird for some stories the characters starred in to be non-canon while others are not (Quinlan Vos' in the comics comes to mind).

But still, it would have helped greatly. I'll say they're doing a hell of a job reusing elements of scrapped pre-production material. I like that a lot.
But I understand how you feel about the seeming lack of attention to the preexisting things that have been brought back. It's like, oh, they name drop Darth Bane, Rule of Two, etc., but we're left in the dark about anything else surrounding this folk tale of a character who is otherwise beloved by EU fans and has an established backstory that could easily be shoehorned into canon material.
