Ammo has weight now, so travelling light is important if you want to be able to carry anything you find out there.
You need to bring water with you, and producing that at your settlements is now critical. Farming is also more important, and with that comes way more cooking. Wayyyyyy more.Oh, and another thing, there's no fast travel. You have to get to Diamond City?
Better start walking. This gets a little easier later as you complete quests and unlock alternative ways to get around, but for the most part you're gonna be getting sore legs.Then you start getting stronger.After my run in with too many deathclaws, I started to truly appreciate power armor. I don't know if I'm just weird, but when I completed the game on Normal, I never touched power armor. I felt it was way too clunky, too much maintenance, and overall I just didn't feel there was enough firepower coming my way to justify it.There hasn't been a moment I've not been in Power Armor on survival, and that's both a blessing and a curse.Yes, it has saved me ass more times than I can count, but it can also make you feel pretty cocky.
The walk to Diamond City that I once feared was now more of an inconvenience. Enemies were still tough but it started feeling like I could soak up just enough of their damage to not have to cautiously sneak around corners like I once had to do.The only enemies I feared were any that could one hit kill me (mutants with launchers, deathclaws etc.).Balancing is all over the place.Once I hit level 30, all bets were off. This wasn't hard anymore. The survival systems were just an annoyance now.
Why am I always so damn thirsty and hungry? Why does being 'peckish' mean I get punished so heavily? Travelling the same paths over and over just to get back to my settlements was no longer thrilling either.I had hit a rut with Survival. I'd stick with it right up until level 50, at which point I wasn't having fun any longer and turned the difficulty down to 'Very Hard'.
I almost shed a tear when I could fast travel again.I don't regret giving Survival a try. As I mentioned, the first ten hours I spent were some of the best I've ever had in Fallout 4. Turning the pip-boy radio off and putting on some headphones to listen to the eerie atmosphere got me so immersed I was excited to get off from work to play more.I hope you'll give it a try if you ever get around to playing Fallout 4 again. I know it's not easy to program AI but it just feels a bit immersion breaking when a guy in his baseball armor is soaking up more bullets than me in power armor.
I also never much liked the resource management aspect but I don't like Bethesda's insistence on encumbrance either. I played New Vegas on hardcore but that was separate from the combat difficulty. Based on your thoughts and my experience with the game it's unfortunate that the added difficulty appears to come from increased health/armor and increased damage for the enemies. I know it's not easy to program AI but it just feels a bit immersion breaking when a guy in his baseball armor is soaking up more bullets than me in power armor. I also never much liked the resource management aspect but I don't like Bethesda's insistence on encumbrance either.Afraid so!

More legendaries on Survival too, sometimes multiple in a single group of enemies. Ammo having weight is absolutely brutal and almost forces a stealth build unless you went heavily into strength. I gave it a shot and yea I agree with pretty much everything you said. The 'Hardcore mode' in New Vegas was a far better system, it was layered on top of the difficulty setting and was designed to simply add more mechanics to the game which promoted the use of other mechanics like cooking and crafting. Fallout 4 decided to force it into a difficulty setting and then add a bunch of poorly thought out arbitrary rules like how diseases work on top. The biggest offender being the removal of manual saving, Bethesda's games are buggy at best and crashy at worst numerous times I crashed on default survival losing significant progress.
Ultimately that prompted me to mod it to allow me to balance out the systems and remove the tedium as best I could. It's a novel idea and Fallout is a great IP to apply it to, but it was done (like almost everything) significantly better in New Vegas. I played New Vegas on hardcore but that was separate from the combat difficulty. This goes for everyone, including the player character.It totally felt that way initially, but later on, enemies just seem to have ridiculous amounts of health on Survival, making it seem unbalanced. Maybe it's just my build.
